Life in university

Are you thinking of going to university and thinking about what life will be like in university? We will tell you everything about university life.

1- Every decision is made by you

This is the most important thing because when it comes time to choose the university where you will study is one of the most important decisions you have to make in life. You make every decision about your future. So, you decide how you will spend the day, studying or relaxing. It is up to you to choose whether you will be one of those students who start their studies the day before or a student who studies the night before the exam.

2- Diversity

During your university years you will meet people from different countries. They will have cultures, religions, traditions and customs that you do not know and start creating knowledge about them.

3- Contact with family and friends

If you have decided to study away from family and friends the contact will be less than before. Although you will find some time to communicate with them again it will not be enough.

4- You will learn many new things

If you live in a dormitory alone or with other students you will learn not only lectures but also many other things. The need to adapt to another lifestyle will teach you how to cook and take care of many things you have not done before.

5-Facilities

Universities have different kinds of facilities, and these facilities range from libraries to the swimming pools. If you decide to join a university, you need to understand the types of facilities that are available in the university. You should be sure to ask students, teachers or members of the support staff how to access the facilities. You should also try to find out about the rules and guidelines that regulate the use of such facilities.

6-Support Staff

Every university has support staff members who play important role when it comes to supporting students, creating conducive environment where students can learn. When you join a university, you will meet security personnel, social workers among other workers. These individuals support students by offering counseling services, and assessing students’ needs. Opening up to the social workers at the university is one way in which a student can receive the necessary support.

7-Culture

University is an organization that brings together people from diverse backgrounds. To ensure everyone reads from the same page, a university has to have an organizational culture that defines and shapes the conduct of the student and that of the staff. The culture also manifests in the way people dress and treat each other. Thus, you need to take this into account when planning on joining the university.

8-Orientation

In case you feel you might not get everything right when you join university, don’t worry because the purpose of the orientation is to introduce you to the university life including the routines. For instance, you will learn how to access library resources

How technology affects human life

The internet technology is shaping how we consume, move, work, socialize and communicate, and from early 1990s when the internet first went public to the present date, the world has seen tremendous development of the cyberspace technology landscape. Currently, people can order food and products using mobile apps on their phones. They can equally use some of these apps to transfer or receive funds, and share information. As much as the technology has played a significant role in easing how we do certain things, it has its own share of imperfections.

The compulsive need to use the internet or internet addiction, as it is popularly known, is becoming a serious problem considering that millions of internet users spend a considerable amount of time hooked on social media platforms. The more time people spend on these platforms, the more they become unproductive, and in a workplace environment, paying workers who spend a significant amount of their time at work on social media, can have negative effect on the company’s financial bottom-line. It may also result to missed targets and decline in customer satisfaction. A country that is competing economically, and that has a significant number of its populace hooked to the internet, may fail to achieve its growth targets, and economically lag behind others.

The overuse of the internet can have numerous serious health implications ranging from weight-related health issues to mental health problems. Using internet for longer hours is associated with physical inactivity which can cause one to gain weight. Considering the health risks linked to obesity, spending too much time poses health risks.  The effect on the mental health can also be serious given that spending too much time browsing the social media sites until late hours into the night can interfere with one’s sleep, and cause anxiety. Furthermore, the feeling of inadequacy may result if a person excessively uses the social media because when they see others doing better or looking more attractive than they are, they may begin to feel inferior. This can have a toll on one’s mental health.

Looking back three decades back and reflecting on where we are as a human race, there is no doubt we have managed to make significant progress in terms of advancing technological landscape. Unfortunately, the same technology we have developed to help us solve problems is creating new problems such as the rise in obesity-based illnesses. Humans can however build on the previous experiences and successes to come up with ideas that solve the new issues that are emerging out of the technology.
